The Jharkhand exam irregularities 2026 have now become one of the biggest student movements of the year in the state. The number of Candidates has risen to hundreds, and they have been sitting in protest for 11 consecutive days at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi.

 Anger at a mere civil service test has grown into a broader Jharkhand students’ protest calling for a structural reform of the two top recruitment agencies in the state. It has attracted anti-MCM parties, central agencies and Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself.

Why Are Students Protesting In Jharkhand?

The Jharkhand students are protesting in the wake of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) 14th Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination held on April 19. The model answer key was released, and the results were announced around a month later, when candidates found discrepancies in the results.

This led to the arrest of one candidate, Suman Saurav, along with 10 others by the Jharkhand Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the charge of arranging a leak. However, for many aspirants, it was just a continuation of a trend that has long been a problem in the state’s recruitment exam system – paper leaks, delayed results, and even aborted papers, that began with the JSSC-CGL controversy in 2024.

 The protest started on 25th July under the banner of JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch. It descended to a new level after the students of the sit-in transferred to Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium on July 29 and increased further on August 2 when the student leader Devendra Nath Mahto started an indefinite hunger strike on the stadium premises.

The three demands at the heart of the Ranchi protest against the Jharkhand exam are:

The protesters first want to cancel the questionable 14th JPSC Combined Preliminary civil service exam completely instead of making partial fixes.

Second and, most significantly, they are asking for an independent investigation by the CBI into the alleged exam malpractice, saying the state-run CID investigation is not enough as both JPSC and the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) fall under the same government that is said to be the culprit. A few of the protestors also want the Enforcement Directorate to look into the money trail behind the alleged leaks, while suggesting that only a CBI investigation by a central agency can be considered as an impartial investigation.

 Thirdly, students are demanding structural changes in both JPSC and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). They say the continuous controversies surrounding exam malpractices clearly indicate that there were problems in the system and not merely a few lapses and that meaningful accountability is important to regain trust in the recruitment process of government jobs in the state.

What Did The Jharkhand Government Say?

In public statements, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who has been responding to the agitation over the irregularities in the Jharkhand examination 2026, has sounded conciliatory but firm. Speaking to reporters, he said that his government was sensitive to the issue, having “eyes and ears” and waiting for the results of the CID investigation before taking any further action.

He has repeatedly declined to give the case to the CBI, and in a separate statement, a senior minister in the state government has cited the CBI’s treatment of the NEET paper leak case as reason enough to believe the investigation in the case is being conducted by the state’s own agency. Soren has insisted that once the current probe is over, the government will take “strict action under the law” and guarantee students’ justice, but has refrained from saying the exam will be cancelled or giving a definite timeframe for the completion of the probe.

How Has The Political Response Evolved?

The student agitation against the irregularities in the Jharkhand exam now seems to have a political edge. Opposition BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, in public, has called for a CBI probe in the matter, accusing the recruitment commissions of corruption and nepotism, while former chief minister and BJP state chief Babulal Marandi has also criticized the state government’s policies on recruitment exams in general. Since then, both the BJP and Congress have adopted parts of the protesters demands, which have further put pressure on the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led government.

Protest leaders have expressed their confidence in the wake of similar protests in Delhi, which compelled the resignation of the Union Education Minister after the leak in the NEET-UG exam paper. Now one may have to undergo a similar reckoning in Jharkhand, say student leaders. Meanwhile, the sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium has been expanding, and protesters have warned that the protest will go beyond the Ranchi stadium if the government does not take any drastic measures to prevent its spread to all 24 districts of Jharkhand. Meanwhile, student leaders are promising to continue their hunger strike and sit-in protest until either the CID probe results in concrete accountability measures or the government agrees to refer the matter to the CBI.
