The Jharkhand student protest Day 14 brought the first real movement in a fortnight’s stand-off. The state government held its first formal discussion with agitating students on Friday night since the protest turned violent.

The meeting took place in the State Guest House and lasted for 1.5 hours. A student delegation held a meeting with four state ministers and a senior bureaucrat to discuss the ongoing JPSC and JSSC recruitment row.

What Happened In The First Round Of Talks?

A 10-member team of JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch represented the students. On the government side, ministers Deepika Pandey Singh, Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Chamra Linda and Sanjay Yadav, and Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh were present.

 After the meeting, organiser Rajesh Prasad said the government had asked for some time to study the demands. The protest will go on till August 10, after which the agitation will further escalate unless there is some change on the ground, he added. Organiser Binay Kumar said that talks are positive but not yet complete.

The government held discussions on all demands and has made a promise to put them before Chief Minister Hemant Soren, but did not provide any explicit commitment on accepting any of them,” he said. Why Are Students Threatening To March To The Assembly?

During the talks, student representatives reiterated their main core demands. This includes the ongoing cancellation of the JPSC Combined Civil Services Examination-14, investigation by the CBI of the alleged recruitment scam and, if there are any financial irregularities, by the Enforcement Directorate.

 There is also a demand that all the recruitment exams of the main accused Abhay Tiwari or Manoj Tiwari be withdrawn. Already, Tiwari has been arrested in the case. The organisers have set August 10 as the deadline, as the government is not giving any firm commitments. Protesters have come up with an “Assembly Gherao” to push the state government further if demands are not met by then.

What Other Flashpoints Marked The Day?

Day 14 of the student protest was a tumultuous one not just on the day of the actual talks, but also on Friday. Student Rahul Kranti, who started his hunger strike on Tuesday night, was rushed to Ranchi Sadar Hospital after his condition worsened.

Meanwhile, two other protesters were also rushed to hospital as the continuous rain further complicated the situation at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. Black ink was also thrown on All India Students’ Association president Neha Bora during a student march in Ranchi. The man who was responsible was detained by police, apparently for ideological differences.

 In the Jharkhand Assembly, BJP members staged their own protests, asking for cancellation of the tainted exams and the monitoring of the CBI investigation by the High Court. The CID’s investigation has also gained momentum with 19 people arrested to date in connection with the alleged malpractice in conducting exams.

How Has The Political Response Evolved?

The Jharkhand student protest Day 14 developments have brought the political and civil society under a broader lens. The Congress had earlier sent a team to the protest camp to meet with the students on strike, giving the protest cause national visibility.

CJP organiser Abhijeet Dipke has also shared his support, saying that he would visit Jharkhand too. The party has already had detailed discussions with the protest organizers days before, national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said.

Not all groups, however, are in sync. There were divisions within the larger student movement, with one protest platform, the JPSC-JSSC Abhyarthi Nyay Manch, saying it was not included in the talks on Friday.

The current Jharkhand student protest discussions have, for now, created a time lag for the government without finding a solution to the heart of the issue. Both sides are under pressure as they approach the August 10 deadline the quickly approaching, and the deadlock is poised to enter a more confrontational stage.
