The Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan was launched by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, through video conferencing on 2nd August 2026, laying a blueprint for a vision of India where drug-free youth will remain the bedrock of Viksit Bharat or developed India. Modi said that the young citizens of India who have access to more than one crore – from across more than 28,000 locations – must remain physically and mentally fit to become a developed India; hence the need to avoid substance abuse. Before his speech, the participating youth took an oath to help make India drug-free in the presence of over 125 spiritual and public organisations, educational institutions and industrial associations who joined with the government for the launch of the event.

Modi explained that the Jan Bhagidari campaign for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, which is being run nationwide, is now underway and that activities related to art, culture, sports, meditation, spirituality and community service will be organised every Sunday from now on. “This is not just a one-off but a movement going from the community to make the next 100 Sundays 100 drug-free days in the direction of a completely drug-free India,” he said. The message of a drug-free life would be gaining more and more traction and acceptance through these weekly touch points, slowly making a dent in schools, colleges and neighbourhoods across the country.
Addressing the youth directly, the PM said that over the next 20-25 years they will be carving out the future of India and by 2047 it will be their generation that would reap the benefits of their efforts as India becomes a developed nation. He cited the young Indians today who are making new records in startups, Artificial Intelligence and sports, science and space, and contended that the country needs their energy, imagination and talent without being mired in addiction. This long-term investment in the country’s future is what Modi spoke about to bring urgency in the campaign of Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, and the campaign was for the individual, the family, society and most importantly the nation.

“When a youngster slips into drug abuse, it is not just the individual who suffers, Modi said candidly, commenting on the human suffering that accompanies addiction. The dream never comes to an end, he said, adding that an entire family suffers and often breaks, and when it’s done in many families, so is the strength of the country as a whole. Going ahead, he claimed that the youth of hostile countries are deliberately being lured by them to take drugs, and they are profiting from drug trafficking while at the same time trying to weaken the nation, which is the reason that it is very important to protect all the young people from falling into such a trap through the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan and similar campaigns.
The Prime Minister advised families not to keep the secret of addiction and take the help of professionals, as rehabilitation centres have been opened throughout the country. He said a person’s history with drugs should never define them, and that society should accept them for their bravery in overcoming addiction, not stigmatize them because it could push them to conceal their addiction. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Mansukh Mandaviya, who was present at the launch of the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, remarked that the initiative is in continuation of the ongoing National initiative, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which had begun with the pilot project in Kashi last year and has now expanded to the entire country.

Concerning the enforcement, Modi stated that the government had taken a quantum leap in the action against drug scofflers and dealers – the number of drug scofflers and dealers arrested has increased sharply from previous years, and he learnt that the government seized drugs worth crores of rupees worth during the past few operations. He believed that this work will continue uninterrupted on both the Union and state governments and also with the community awareness campaign at the core of the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan. Officials state that the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan is not meant to replace this drive but will go hand in hand with this. It will address the demand at the same time; it will address the supply at the same time. The twin thrust of enforcement on supply, along with grassroots mobilisation against demand, is expected to propel the campaign against drug abuse with fresh momentum as India gears up for its 2047 development targets.
